Recently our Sunday ritual involved having the quintessential Misal Pav at a local joint and getting back home just in time to watch the latest episode of ‘Satyamev Jayate’. Sitting together to witness the harsh reality of our country for an hour and later discussing about the possible solutions over lunch had become a routine. The conversation used to ignite the zenith of patriotism within us. It was as if we would leave the table and march towards a revolution. This fire would eventually be utilized to digest the insane amount of Mutton Rassa and Rice, which would obviously culminate into a nice long nap! By the time we woke up, we would rush to make the most of our priceless Sunday. Soon we would be engulfed by the mundanities of everyday life and begin to subconsciously wait for the weekend again.
I am confident that a lot of folks can relate to this. We all genuinely wish to do something meaningful for our country but cannot figure out why this feeling is so short-lived. Maybe it’s because we all are so entangled fighting our own battles that we forget to look at the larger picture (or use that as an excuse!). I was living in the same bubble until I was blessed with the golden opportunity of meeting Mr. Aamir Khan. As he spoke about his show and the positive impact it had on the society, I noticed a twinkle in his eye that clearly depicted how passionately he had worked towards it. I fail to remember the last time I left the same way. This question stuck with me for a while. Soon I started to harness my long forgotten enthusiasm and decided to take up one cause for the betterment of my city.
On our recent visit to Spiti Valley (the land between Tibet and India) I was awestruck with the kind of beauty that our country has been bestowed with. Every mountain had a different story to tell. Every rock synced perfectly to create a picturesque effect. I was taken aback with the fact that in spite of being a poverty struck region, everything was spic and span. The residents had preserved the sanctity of that place which resulted into it being an upcoming tourist attraction. People from around the world have been visiting this place for years. Suddenly all the proverbs about cleanliness started making sense to me. I finally found my cause. I pledged to work for a cleaner city.
I watched Satyamev Jayate’s Waste Management episode again. I started pondering over the possible solutions for my city. After some research, I was more than happy to know that about a Nashik based ecologically and socially conscious center know as “EarthCare Designs” who create and support the design of products/systems which foster the conservation of energy resources. They specialize in Eco friendly products, Green Technology, Waste-Care Solutions, Composter, Coconut shell Jewellery & Accesories, Lamp shades. I was thoroughly impressed with their dedication towards the cause.
One product that really helped me to come closer to my cause was the ‘Waste Care Composter’ which turns your kitchen waste into compost in just 2 months! Composting is a completely natural process that reduces your food waste to its natural components of water, carbon dioxide and a small residue. The Waste Care Composter takes all cooked and uncooked food waste including dairy products, vegetables, fruit peels and leftover food. Put all your food waste into your Waste Care Composter bin, situated in an aerated area of your garden – and watch how almost everything turns into compost! I learned that our city spends Rs.5,00,00,000/- annually for waste disposal. If all of us would decide to manage the waste by ourselves, it would make an immeasurable difference to our city.
The biggest lesson that I learned from this project was how simple segregation of waste would play a pivotal role to keep our city be clean and green.70% of the total household waste can be utilized to produce compost. Such basic steps taken together can bring about a remarkable change in our society. Our colonies residents have already have already started installing the composters and we are working on taking this up at a bigger scale. I would like to share also some interesting statistics about composting. Turns out we can bring the trash that we throw can be brought back to our plate! (These are in regards to the garbage produced in our country).
So go and meet that long forgotten neighbor! Conduct a meeting to discuss the problems of your society and implementation of possible solutions. Stop wasting your time on complaining about the drawbacks of the governance. Let the charity begin from home.
Promoting this is my attempt at making a difference! What’s yours?
P.S: The composter makes a perfect gift for Christmas and New Year’s.
